Virginia Thompson, award-winning executive producer and alumna of the National Screen Institute, has been named as the new chair of its board of directors.

As board chair, Virginia supports the senior leadership team, staff and board in the fulfillment of the National Screen Institute’s strategic plan, which includes continuing the organization’s mission to provide inclusive, customized training and mentorship to creators who are changing the world through the power of story.

“The National Screen Institute is all about creating space for underrepresented voices and serving those who are passionate about storytelling,” says Virginia. “We see the power in partnerships, we’re responsive to market trends and are committed to providing training that is accessible and world-class. We’re here to amplify the storytellers of the future and position them for success.”

Virginia is the first National Screen Institute alumna to be appointed to this vital role. In 2000, she was a participant in NSI Features First. In 2012, she joined the board and has been dedicated to supporting the sustainability of the organization.

“When I joined, I was excited to take an active role in helping the National Screen Institute restructure, refocus and position the organization for the future. Today, I’m excited to say that we are poised for growth.”

Virginia is the president of the production company, Vérité Films. She served as executive producer of the iconic Canadian comedy brand, Corner Gas; other projects include the animated musical children’s series Jeremy and Jazzy, award winning children’s series Incredible Story Studio and youth drama series renegadepress.com. Virginia is also executive producer of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards celebrating Canada’s most impactful artists in film, television, music, dance and theatre.

Former board chair, Marlene Kendall, CPA, CA, served for three years in the role before joining the senior management team as chief financial officer.
